Playing along to a CD of your favorite players is a great way to practice. I learned most of my lead style from playing along with Clapton and J. Winters. The Ventures put out a great “Play Guitar with the Ventures” album, which had versions of their hits, without the lead and or rhythm.
For more experienced players, playing along to a radio station is great because, just like in a pro situation, you must listen and learn. Find the Key and Time Signature, work out the Chord Progression/Song Structure then figure out what notes make up the melody. Start out with Blues, Folk or Country tunes, they’re usually fairly simple.
I think a Sony MP-GT Guitar Trainer will do that($220 at L&M)
